Starting A Journal - Tips And Tricks!

12 comments Share It:

WHY KEEP A JOURNAL?
Something I really love about journalling is the layers you can build on a single page. If you want to express yourself, if you want to write how you are feeling but you want to keep it safe in your heart you can have the release of writing, and just cover it up afterward. The beautiful thing is your journal doesn't have to make sense, it doesn't have to be pretty, you don't need to have an exceptionally interesting life or things to write about. Anything remotely to do with you deserves to be in your journal. And it can be as irrelevant as a quote, or a word you like. It can be something you want to remember, a to do list, a shopping list. It can be a scribble, a photograph- a piece of paper from your favourite magazine or a receipt from something you bought. There are no rules! That's the beauty of it. Journalling can help you be more in touch with yourself- your creative self, your emotional self. It can help you remember, reflect and release. Your journal doesn't have to be a beautiful place, just a safe place. Somewhere you can be without judgement. Without pressure! It can allow you to accept imperfection and understand growth through mistakes.
Another reason I really love keeping journals is the satisfaction of finished page/s or even a finished book. To be able to look back on moments you had forgotten about and to simply see pieces of your life pressed on a page. It really does add a value to your life because you have taken the time to document it. You start to exist on those pages, and that makes it feel important, even the little things. You can personally appreciate your own self, and all the small things that make your life yours! Journalling can be therapeutic, it's fun, it's private. Get to know yourself through journalling! Explore your own mind and your own creativity. It's a process that never has to end and it keeps your mind expanding creatively while keeping in touch with yourself.

BREAKING A PAGE:
Sometimes getting started is the hardest part about journalling. That blank white page can be all too perfect and intimidating. We tend to think our journal should look perfect and pretty and that our writing should be interesting, meaningful or purposeful. That's just not the point! Once you start on a page, finishing it becomes so much easier. Depending on the type of journal you are using- whether it be a diary style, an art journal, a collage or scrapbook style- the best place to start is just to start! Don't plan too much or get caught up making things perfect. Splash some colour on a page or glue an image or a piece of ephemera and use it to help prompt you to write! Or if you don't like writing collect little pieces from your days and stick them down in your book however you feel like! Journalling should be an intuitive and impulsive process! Allow yourself to express freely and just do what makes you feel happy! Sometimes the actual process is so much more important than the end result. Writing, drawing, gluing, painting- it can be a healing or reflective activity. It can be fun and relaxing. It should be don,e from start to finish, without any pressures from yourself. Allow yourself to start, to make mistakes and to ENJOY the process no matter the outcome. Never criticise or second guess it, just allow yourself to get lost in a page and be impulsive about the way you create it. That's what it's all about!

QUICK TIPS FOR STARTING A JOURNAL:
If you're anything like me, you grew up writing in a diary as a child, and stuck with it through your teenage years.. Well, if 'stuck with it' meant stopping and starting in a million different journals, always getting bored and giving up. Starting in a journal is always exciting, it's like that feeling at the beginning of a new year- a fresh start. The book is pretty, it's clean and perfect and ready to be filled with amazing stories and memories, right?
Not necessarily!

My first tip, a very important one which I included in my top 5 in Get Creative Magazine in May- it doesn't matter what you journal about! It doesn't have to be exciting or interesting or even make sense. Your journal is for you. It's a place to enjoy, unwind, be yourself. Write little things you want to remember or work through issues through writing- like therapy if you wish, it doesn't matter what the content is as long as you want to write about it.

Next tip, don't ever put pressure on yourself to journal every day. YES you need to make time to journal, but it should be done freely without rules or limitations. I don't journal every day! I journal whenever I feel inspired to do so.. Sometimes I have something in particular I want to write about, sometimes I have pieces of ephemera from my days that I want to glue in. Some weeks I may feel like journaling every day, other times I won't journal for weeks! Your journal waits for you! Make good use of it but allow it to be your happy place, too.

But don't get stuck on writing.. Writing in your journal can be fun, and therapeutic but it's not the only way to do it! If you like to draw, do that! If you like to collage, do that! I like to collect ephemera from my life- mail, tickets, labels, photos etc, but I also like to incorporate images or papers that simply look appealing to me. The fun thing about journalling is it can be whatever you want it to be. And filling blank pages with images that make your heart sing can be so rewarding all in itself!
Which brings me to my next tip! - use memorabilia in your journals! This can make your journal so much more exciting to use and read! Things from your life can help jog your memory and even help prompt you to write! Again, the writing teamed with your memorabilia doesn't have to be exciting and your memorabilia can be as simple as a piece of packaging from something you bought or a stamp off some mail, use your imagination and you will be surprised at how much of your every day life can be documented in this way!

Another fun way to keep interested in keeping a journal, is to add interaction to your journal. Pockets, envelopes, hidden tags and tucked away journalling can make your book so much funner to write in and read through. Using washi tape to add extra envelopes and pockets is easy, fast and it looks pretty! You can also use glue or double sided tape, there's no rules, do what works for you!

My last tip for now, which is possibly the most important of all, is to allow yourself to journal freely without striving for perfection. As soon as you put pressure on yourself to make a perfect page, you suck the enjoyment right out! All the little accidents you make while you journal are a part of you, your real life and they capture a certain charm or element you won't find on a 'perfect page'. The little marks or scribbles give substance to your journalling and add character and make it so much more interesting anyway! You can't ruin a journal by using it, using it is what makes it interesting and oh so special!

Don't be afraid of your journal- just dive in and enjoy the journey!

If you're still feeling stuck for inspiration you should check out some journalling process videos on youtube! I have done some on my channel here. And there is a wealth of inspiration available to you from other creative people too!

Starting My Traveler's Notebook

1 comment Share It:
It's been a while since I've posted over here! I have a small pile of post ideas all lined up but finding the time to actually sit at my computer and put them together is a whole 'nother story! Story of my life! - I want to do everything and have no time for what I already do!

Anyway, I thought I'd pop up some photos of my latest projects. First up- I am finally jumping the bandwagon and trying a traveler's notebook! I plan to use it for my personal journaling, with an insert for each of my kids and an insert for bullet journaling my days. Since making journals is kind of my thing, I knew I would be making my own inserts for the most part! And I got so carried away making my firt set of 3three, that I went ahead and made my next set too! I am challenging myself in this book to write more often, try new things and hopefully discover along the way what works for me! But I don't hold any expectations, pressures or rules upon myself for my journaling journey, we will see where it takes me!

Penpal/Travelling Journal

1 comment Share It:
I've been a little absent on youtube and social media recently; just trying to keep life little more balanced and less techy. I have also just been super busy being creative and I can't wait to share a bunch of new things I have been working on soon!

Something I do want to share today though, is a book I have made to go back and forth between myself and a penpal of mine; Britteny from the USA.
This project has been a long time coming, and was first planned between us many months ago. It took me some time to collect extra bits and pieces I wanted to send to her and her family but it is finally on it's way!

The idea is that we will each keep the journal for a period of time, and do various entries in it while we have it with us. I have included a booklet in the front for collecting ideas of entries we could do, some of those for example are- collections of ephemera, such as food packets from things we ate in one day, drawings, nail polish swatches, collages, the list goes on and on. Today I will share just a few photos of what the book looks like, as I don't want to give too much away before she gets it! But I may do a youtube video some time in the future, or the next time the journal is in my possession.

So far, the cover is half covered in stamps- and we have decided to add more and more of them as we go. I have stitched the pages in quite loosely as I think after we finish it, it might be nice to divide the pages between us into two separate books.

Britteny also asked me create another grungy journal for her using some materials she provided such as the leather cover and the binding thread. She wanted it super grungy so I did some inking and staining to the pages. Inside she asked me to put a few little bits and pieces throughout it randomly for her to discover. I had lots of fun making these books and I hope she likes how they turned out!

Vintage Game Pieces Junk Journal

2 comments Share It:
Today I am sharing a journal I created for a friend of mine that I met through my ventures on youtube! I came across a lady by the name of Renee, who curates junk journal kits with a variety of vintage pieces she has collected. Renee and her husband have an etsy shop where she sells the kits, along with an assortment of other amazing vintage items! If you'd like to check out her shop click here. She also has a youtube channel where she showcases her kits, if you want to see that, click here!

Anyway, as I was saying; Renee was kind enough to send me an enormous parcel full of goodies, just as a random act of kindness! It was a little bit of a surprise as I never expected to receive such a generous gift, and though she never expected anything in return I knew I wanted to send her a thank you present! For this journal I thought it would be fitting to use some of her amazing pieces to put together a journal with her in mind.
I used an altered book for the cover and collaged over it with a variety of vintage game pieces, playing cards, book pages and more! I also created a chunky charm made out of 'found' pieces, varying from game pieces to buttons and some beads to pull it all together.

Inside the journal I also added a bunch of random tabs using more playing cards, vintage pieces and some bits from my own stash. They overhang the pages for an extra element of interest!
Inside the journal I made the signatures up of scrapbook papers and vintage book pages, along with some ledger sheets and lined papers. I have also added some paper bags and created pockets using flash cards and other bits and pieces. Throughout the book I have tucked loads of fun vintage pieces and journal cards in to be written or stuck down as she uses it!
This journal was SO much fun to make and it was a great way to kind of 'break in' those gorgeous vintage items I was a little scared to use up! Now I am so excited to create some more journals using some of the same pieces!
If you'd like to see more of this journal, I have also shared a flip through of this journal on my youtube channel here.

Family heritage journal

3 comments Share It:
I first began my etsy shop Little Bindy (formerly, Paperdreaming) because I was making far too many journals to ever actually use, and I was also quickly running out of friends to give them away to!

Today, my etsy shop still allows me to make as many journals as I like, without owning too many myself.

One thing I try really hard not to do is hang on to journals I make just because I love them. I love all the journals i make so I have had to become quite strict about what I will allow myself to keep!
This means the journals I do keep for myself are usually very special because they have a specific purpose. I use my journals to record memories, usually centered around my children, and I absolutely love filling them with bits and pieces of our lives.

For a while now, I have had this idea of a journal made specifically for keeping some very special pieces of real ephemera. I would think of it as a family history/heritage journal. I finally got to creating this book recently, so I thought I would share it with you guys.

It is made up of some of my favourite papers; a variety of different weights and patterns. I have included envelopes, file folders and some vintage style ephemera from different paper lines.

As well as my real, special ephemera I have also included a few true vintage paper pieces I have been collecting.
My own ephemera includes photographs of my parents, photographs of myself and my siblings as children, my own children, copies of birth certificates and birth announcements, baby foot and hand prints (my own and my children's) and various paper ephemera such as notes my grandpa has hand written and envelopes signed by my Nanna.
I plan to include some more ephemera from my relatives as soon as I am able to get copies, these will include old family photographs, family trees and pictures of the family home I grew up in.

I did not tea tye anything in this journal as I didn't want to risk acidity levels of the tea/coffee damaging any papers, regardless of whether they were originals or copies. I kind of wanted this book to be like a family heirloom that could be passed down for generations, so I was sure to make it so that it would last for many years.

The charms I used on the spine of this journal are a collection of old trinkets I have been saving since I was a child, along with some charms from my stash. I have added a locket with a photo of my babies inside, a broken old watch charm from a necklace my best friend gave me when we were little, my cat Soko's old name tag and some charms I made from beads my little sister gave me in the form of a fishing wire bracelet (which was too small) when she was in preschool. I plan to add to the charms and the book as our family grows and collect new memories along the way.

Toddler talk

1 comment , Share It:

Three years ago I was heavily pregnant expecting my first baby boy. I had just turned eighteen, and I was living at my boyfriend's mums house with close to no idea what life would hold for me from there.

This April my baby is turning three! It blows my mind how much he has grown up and how much things have changed for us. Everything has changed for us!
Laec was just the beginning to the greatest adventure of my life and in all honestly, without sounding cheesy as hell; I can barely remember life before him.

The past year my little boy has gone from a 10-20 word vocabulary to now saying words like "important" and "frustrating" and "oh my goodness!". Every day he makes me so happy with the little sentences he manages to string together- so I decided to pop them down into a book for safe keeping. He is growing so rapidly that I know it won't be long until his big words and sentences actually match up to his little body!

I love reading through this book and I plan to use it for both my kids as they grow up. It is the little golden book 'A child's garden of verses' turned journal- with blank sheets in between the real pages. I bought it from a cute market shop that transforms books to journals this way- super simple but so charming! And being a journal maker myself I felt compelled to support the work and buy one before I even knew what i'd use it for. I'm so glad I did because this book is perfect for this purpose! I used to own a copy as a child and marvel over the illustrations, so it's already very nostaligic for me.

I hope you get a giggle out of some of the quotes I've shared below. And I promise they are even cuter coming from his little mouth and in his sweet little voice!

Me: What should we do today?
Laec: Umm, drink!!!!

Me: Can you please get me a nappy for Wren?
Laec: Of course mummy, just wait a minute.

Me: Wren's looking at you, he loves you!
Laec: Love you so much bubba Wren! *Pats his face* Aww he's so sweet.

Laec: What's that hobble noise?
(About someone mowing their lawn)

Me: *Yawn*
Laec: Tired mummy?
Me: Yeah
Laec: Good job.

Trae whispered something to me and Laec copied him and whispered "something something"

Laec holding Wren: It's mine.

Trae: Laec, do you want to go to preschool and you can play with other kids? Play in the sandpit and read books....
Me: ... Do some paintings..
Laec: I like.... PIZZA!!

"It's a sweaty house!"

"Mummy has an egg ache?"

I dropped my phone and Laec says:
You spilt your phone?

Laec in the bath:
I'm getting soggy!

Laec broke a crayon and said "mum fix it!"
Me: I can't fix it
Laec: Oh. You can't fix it... Daddy can fix it!

"Bubba Wren, you need a shower? You're a bit stinky."

While I was looking in the mirror:
Mum you so cute?

I was making some charms out of gum nuts for a journal so I was painting them in varnish and then standing them upside down to dry. They were different sizes so Laec was going "oh it's mummy and daddy and Laec!" And there was just one gum nut that wouldn't stand up without falling over and he goes "oh! It's Georgie!!" (His aunty)

Me: What's the time?
Laec: It's three five dollars

Wren did a poop and Laec says: That was an interesting poop.

Laec tries to trick me out of bed time by saying "oh good morning mummy! I had a good sleep! Like he thinks i won't know it's really night time.

Laec: What you doing mummy?
Me: Making you porridge
Laec: Oh, that's so cute.

Me: Who's your best friend?
Laec: Umm.. My favourite is bubba Wren.

Laec: Oh! It's so windy! Should we go on a picnic?

"Can you hold me?"

Me: Laec be careful, you're squishing Wren
Laec: I'm not squishing him, he's my favourite.

Laec: Oh, he needs the bonjelly (bonjela)

When Laec wants to do something or me to do something he will say:
Should I throw this?
Should we have an iceblock?
Should you sit with me?

Me: What do you want a drink of?
Laec: Just a drink of milk. Fresh milk.

Me:You're the cutest thing ever.
Laec: No, you!!

Project Life - Baby Album

No comments Share It:
Today's post is a share of my son's first year baby album which I am currently working on. He is 6 months now- I can't believe it, but knowing how fast time flies when you have children and how fast they grow up; I have put a lot of planning and effort into documenting Wren's first year and all those special little moments.
Laec has an album too, but he was my first baby and I was new to scrapbooking so I feel like I left a lot of things out. Don't get me wrong, I'm still glad I kept the pieces I did of his first year and I love to look through it, but for Wren's album I feel like I was able to improve my layout ALOT and I am really happy with how it's coming along.

For my baby albums, I absolutely love using the Project Life scrapbooking system. If you're new to it, it's basically a pocket page album, which means it can be as easy as slipping photographs into pre-made, perfectly fitted pockets to make up your pages. The reason I love these so much is because I take a lot of photos of my kids, and it is a really easy and manageable way to keep on top of photo heavy layouts.
So, lets get into it!

The first part of his album is all about the pregnancy. I made sure to include ultrasound information with photos, bump photos, our thoughts and feelings about the pregnancy and names we liked. I recorded my cravings and symptoms and photos of the nursery, things we had collected for him, choosing his name, as well as details of our baby shower and various DIY projects that we did for him.

I also included a family tree page and a spread which sort of introduced him to the family that he was about to be born into! I thought that was a lot of fun, and will sort of enable him to see life before and after he was here, which he may find interesting one day.

I made sure to document any complications during the pregnancy and any interesting details from our appointments.

The next section is for when he was born! One of my favourite parts. The first spread is all about the birth, I included the photo of the first time I got to hold him, his foot prints and birth facts. I also included an envelope full of ephemera from the hospital. Inside I kept my obstetric card, paper tape measure, congratulation cards, his birth announcement and even the hospital lunch menu as well as the information booklet we received when we booked in.

I wrote out my birth story when it was fresh in my mind, perhaps a day or two after he was born and I later typed it out to keep in the album. It is so easy to forget the small details as time goes on! And when I read through it now I can remember it like it were yesterday!!

For the next few layouts I have included some details from the first few days/weeks at home and lots of photos too! I wanted to make sure I thoroughly documented him when he was fresh and new because I knew it would pass by so quickly. I included some of his 'firsts' like first birth and first shopping trip and I have done a few full page spreads with family photo shoots and photos of meeting other members of our family for the first time.

The rest of the album is probably my favourite part! It is easy for me to keep up with and I really look forward to doing the layout each month. I find it so fun and relaxing but also, it helps me to really absorb all those fleeting moments I have had with my kids during that month.
For each month I decided to include on a double page spread- my most favourite photographs from the month, a photo of him in the same spot, next to the same teddy to show his growth and a calendar page to show a bit of what we got up to that month. This is an easy addition for me because my son was born on the 29th!

I also decided to keep my milestone cards in the same position each month so it looks consistent and makes the spread quick and easy for me to do. I do one 4x6 card for a paragraph overview of what's gone on that month and another 4x6 card with bullet points of milestones he reached during that month.

I am only up to month 6, which I will be working on as soon as my photos arrive!
At the back of the album I am slowly adding 3x4 photos of his monthly growth photos onto a one page spread, this will show us clearly how much he changed and grew over the course of the year. And I will probably add a spread of his first birthday along with a letter for him when he turns 1.

So that's my baby album so far! I am excited to see it when it's finished. But It's really chunky already, (Becky Higgins if you're reading this- please design albums with even bigger rings!) I am a simple project lifer with limited embellishments but I am STILL struggling to keep this into one album!

If you want to see my album more in depth, I have filmed a flip through/walk through of it on my youtube channel here: https://youtu.be/1e8k0pTtsLc
